Hugh Chapman, Year 11, Anderson has been selected to represent WA in the Under 16 Rugby squad. Hugh was named Player of the Tournament in the recent trial games in recognition of his commitment and dedication to his pre-season preparation and performances throughout the year.
Congratulations to Ben Marris, Year 9, Brisbane and Tommy Clements, Year 9, Cameron who travelled to Melbourne over the holidays to represent WA in the 15 Years and Under Male National State Water Polo Championships, with their team placing fourth overall. In addition, Ben has been selected for the Australian Cadet Men’s Waterpolo Squad which is an incredible achievement.
Alex Pigneguy Year 11 Ferguson achieved his Recreational Aviation Australia pilots license over the holidays. Alex has been training for this for 18 months fitting in the extensive training required around his academic, sporting and music commitments. Alex will embark on his commercial pilot’s licence on finishing at the College at the end of 2023.
Primo Lux
The following students’ writing has been accepted for publication in this year’s edition of Primo Lux, a state-wide poetry anthology comprised of winning poetry entries from Years 10, 11 and 12 students across Western Australia:
Rory Fleming, Year 10, Brisbane – “Groundcover”
Andrew Ellis, Year 11, Brisbane – “The Light in the Dark”
James Caporn, Year 11, Shearer – “Nature’s Silence”.
This publication will be launch in Fremantle in early December and these students have been invited to read their contributions at the launch.
Perth Philosothon
In the final week of Winter Term, UWA hosted the state’s premiere Philosophy competition, the Perth Philosothon. The competition is distinct from the debate format in that students from different year groups join forces and are rewarded most, not for beating their opponents’ arguments, but rather for helping their group build consensus and develop others’ ideas with the goal of arriving at a deeper collective understanding. Under the guidance of Scholar in Residence, Akram Azimi, this year the Scotch team took a new approach and joined forces with PLC to train in the evenings online via Teams, over the course of several months.
Scotch placed an impressive third overall, securing their place in the Australasian competition where they will compete against the best schools across the country and the broader Asia-pacific region. Congratulations to the team of Robert Eastman (Year 11, Anderson), Alastair Walker (Year 10, Alexander) and Simon Pocock (Year 9, Cameron).
