Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh awards require students to complete Service, Physical Recreation, a Skill and an Adventurous Journey, with the majority of these activities available on campus.
Bronze Award

Gold Award
Jim Allan, Year 12 Cameron
Jim found service to be the most rewarding aspect of his Award. His service component consisted of tutoring younger boys in Mathematics at the Residence, helping assist with the setup of games at the Swanbourne Tigers Junior Football Club on Sunday mornings and participating in All Abilities Cricket. His physical recreation hours comprised playing cricket in summer and badminton in winter. His skill was the continued development of his bagpipe playing. Over the course of his Gold Award, Jim has excelled in his playing ability and held the position of Pipe Corporal this year. Jim joined the Year 12 Gold participants who planned and completed the Cape to Cape as their adventurous journey. For his residential project, he achieved his Open Water Dive certificate in Exmouth and worked with the staff to make the Year 10 trip enjoyable for the boys and staff.
Gold Award
Jarvis Banfield, Year 12 Keys
For his service, Jarvis was involved in three activities. He was active in Surf Life Saving, achieving his Bronze Medallion and completing Surf Life Saving patrols. He helped set up the AFL ovals and scoreboard at Allen Park on weekends. He wrote letters to Old Scotch Collegians recapping memories of their days at school. Jarvis’ physical recreation involved completing multiple triathlons and he also spent time playing AFL. His skill component saw him focus on improving his photography skills by spending time each week taking photos and posting them on the Swannyshores Instagram page. He enjoyed the experience of walking the Cape to Cape with the Gold Duke of Ed boys and was treated to an amazing variety of unique flora and fauna. For Jarvis’ residential project, he worked at the Argonaut Marine Group, a company that pilots large cargo, oil and gas ships into the port of Dampier.
Gold Award
Hugh Mitchell, Year 12 Keys
Hugh has completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award by covering the following activities. For physical recreation, he chose volleyball as his summer sport and hockey as his winter sport. Hugh’s service component saw him helping out at All Abilities Cricket. He spent Sunday mornings at the Swanbourne Tigers Junior Football Club, setting up the fields for the games. He also used holiday time to write letters to Old Scotch Collegians, keeping them updated about events at Scotch and acknowledging their achievements when they were at school. Hugh started playing the guitar for his Bronze Award and has continued to progress and develop his skills. He joined a group of Year 12 Gold Award participants who planned and completed the Cape to Cape as their adventurous journey. For his residential project, Hugh went on an expedition to Exmouth where he was able to complete his Advanced Dive Ticket and assist the Outdoor Education staff with the Year 10 trip.
Gold Award
Bailey Thomson, Year 12 Brisbane
Bailey took part in two service activities. He worked on beach clean ups along the Perth coastline and also assisted the Head of Swimming with coaching the Junior School students in swimming lessons. Bailey’s physical recreation saw him playing volleyball for the most part and he also explored the physiological side of volleyball and the various tactics and game-plans employed to achieve an advantage. His skill section was completed by advancing his snare drum skills and being part of the Scotch/ MLC drumline was a highlight. To complete his hours, Bailey focused on improving his reading skills. He felt that this encouraged his creativity, improved his vocabulary and provided him with ideas for essays. His adventurous journey on the Cape to Cape highlighted that careful preparation was a catalyst for success. On Bailey’s residential journey he completed his PADI Advanced Open Water Dive certificate.
