Week 6, Winter Term 2022
We have had a lot happening in the last few weeks in boarding and it has been great to see so much activity. I was particularly proud of the efforts that everyone put in for Ag Day which was a huge success. I would also like to congratulate boys on finishing off their winter sport season so strongly and for their participation in Athletics. We have also had our leadership applications for the 2022/2023 Academic year in the past fortnight and the boys have spoken incredibly well in front of the group. The Headmaster announced yesterday afternoon that Lochie Elliott will be our 2023 Captain of Boarding. A huge congratulations Lochie, and we look forward to seeing you in the role next year. Further announcements will be made in a separate email next week.
I am full of gratitude for the way in which parents embraced and supported Ag Day this year. It was an incredibly successful day. We raised a lot of money for BlazeAid and for the Royal Flying Doctor Service as well as some projects around boarding. In total, we were able to raise over $9000 which is an incredible amount of money. We hope to put some towards our Middle School Boarding House courtyard to help make that area a lot more ‘green’ and we also hope to put some money towards a basketball court down near Senior boarding, which has been gathering momentum for a number of years now. We also appreciate all the work that has been done for our families in the regions by organisations such as BlazeAid which helped a lot after last year’s fires and also RFDS which are a constant comfort and essential service of regional families. I hope that parents and boys are proud of their efforts and the knowledge that their hard work has certainly paid off. In terms of Ag Day more generally, I think it fit really well alongside the Athletics carnival and I know the Middle School sports in the afternoon also gave the day a great deal of energy. I appreciate the boys’ efforts in the lead up to the event and also on the morning of the event with helping set up the farmers’ market. We will do some planning and reflection as to where to take the day next year. As always, any feedback from parents is most welcome and I will be discussing Ag Day with our Boarding Parent Committee later this term.
Ag Day was also highlighted by a wonderful afternoon tea in the Middle School Boarding House at the end of the day for boarding parents and also for the Perth parents that have offered to car pool all our boarders to their community sports trainings and games throughout the season. Mrs Hannington and Mr Mecham helped arrange for parents to come and share afternoon tea and some gifts and speeches were made to thank the day parents. It was a lovely afternoon and very much appreciated by the day parents.
We have been busy on the road this term, having recently visited Moora and Dowerin and are visiting York this week and Newdegate next week. It is fantastic meeting our current families when we are out in places near your homes and also meeting Old Scotch Collegians and prospective families as well. Many of our current families have been super helpful introducing their friends to us as we have been out on the road, and I think also a positive reflection on how we are caring for our boys back at school, which is the most important thing.
In that sense, some more positive news for boarding is that we have recently commissioned a refurbishment of our Middle School Boarding House to add more bedrooms in order to cater for the large numbers of people who are choosing Scotch for their sons boarding experience. We will be adding 8 more bedrooms in our current bunkroom taking the total number of beds in Middle School Residence to 44, or roughly 22 per year group. It is a sign of healthy growth. The new facilities will look incredible and follow the design and materials of our recent refurbishment of the living spaces last year. This should be complete by January next year. All going well, it will be phase one of a rolling refurbishment process of our Middle School cubicles to ensure that our boys continue to be offered the very best facilities during their time in boarding.
Finally from me, a mention of our Boarding Photography competition that recently concluded and the winners were awarded. Congratulations to all who entered and well done to the winners! The photos are stunning and represent the diversity and beauty within our community as well as promoting creativity and the Arts. A special thank you to Mr Sean ‘Sparkles’ Mecham for all his work on this competition.
All the best

Yr 7 Bibbulmun Track Day Walk – Brookton Hwy
The Yr 7’s and a couple of other boarders from different years were able to catch up on a stretch of the Bib Track on Tuesday 30 August. The sun was shining and everyone was in great spirits for the 12.7km day walk from Dale Rd to Brockton Hwy. Mia Sullivan, Sean Mecham and Jordan Owenell walked with the boys and said it was an enjoyable day out.
