Week 8, Winter Term 2021
Dear Boarding Families
I write this as we have just concluded one of our most special nights on the boarding calendar, our annual SPIRIT award. The SPIRIT award is our most treasured award in boarding as it is an award that is based on the values that we cherish in our boarding community. As I said to the boys tonight, not everyone can run the fastest, jump the highest or get the top score in an assessment, but everyone can live these values. SPIRIT is an acronym for our values we promote in boarding at Scotch;
S parkle – Sparkle is about connection. Sparkle it what you exude, your special essence. The glint in your eye.
P assion – Passion is what fuels you, what lights your fire. It helps build your identity and motivates you to succeed.
I magination – Imagination is the ability to visualise your goals and to be creative in how you express yourself.
R esilience – Resilience is the ability to bounce forward. Learn from the things that you find challenging.
I ntegrity – Integrity is the ability to live your values through your actions. To be true to yourself, be honest and reliable
T enacity – Stick at it! Ride the bumps and persevere. Self-discipline is a fundamental determinate of success in life
The SPIRIT award has been a tradition in boarding from 2009 and was forged in honour of the late Lachlan Higham OSC. Every year, the Higham family led by Lachlan’s parents Tim and Chris come down to Perth from their station near Carnarvon to share a special meal and to celebrate with us. Boys from each year group are nominated and then the final winner is announced and presented with a star on our trophy. I would like to congratulate all of our nominees and a special congratulations to George Purser, who won the award this year.

This fortnight has been a big time at school. In the Middle School, our Year 8s had their big community project presentation evening on Wednesday. The boys did a fantastic job and should be very proud of themselves. Year 9s have been completing their final assessments for the year over the past two weeks as well as going off on Outdoor Ed camp at Moray. The Year 10s have just completed their examination period last week and will be getting results back this week. Year 11 and 12 exams have also begun their end of year exams this week which has meant the boys have been staying in the boarding house studying during the day in between exams. Good luck to all the boys who are completing their examination and especially to the Year 12s who are completing their mocks over the next couple of weeks, including during the first week of school holidays. There has also been a lot of movement at the station as some of our Year 12s that don’t have exams have left boarding for the term throughout this week and will not be back until March Out in October. Similarly, on Friday our Year 10s will be either heading home to start their school holidays or going on Outdoor Ed expedition if they didn’t go in July. It has been lovely to see families as they have come to collect their boys. I would like to reiterate that if you are ever in town to please come and join us in the dining hall for a meal, we love to see parents around on campus!
We have good news on the vaccination front! We are now able to book bulk appointments at the clinic at the Claremont Showgrounds and will be doing this next term. Fiona Richmond will be sending a global to all boarding parents with some important attachments so please read and respond to Fiona’s email. We strongly recommend all boarders get vaccinated against COVID-19 and we hope that these booking opportunities will be a welcome relief for families.
I look forward to seeing parents as they collect their boys at the end of term and invite you to come and visit our new Middle School Boarding House. We are hosting an afternoon tea from 3:00pm for families, especially Middle School families who will be down to watch their boys compete in the Highland Games before taking them home for the holidays. Please also note that there is a staggered start to the term next term. Spring Term starts for Middle School on as well as our Senior Student Leaders on Tuesday 12th October so boys are welcome back on Monday evening. If Middle School boys have an older sibling, they are also welcome back on Monday 11th. All other Senior School boys come back onto boarding on Tuesday 12th to start school on Wednesday 13th October. Please get in contact if you have any questions.
Kind regards
Jordan

Congratulations to George Purser!
Yr 8 Community Project
The Year 8 Community Project is the culminating project of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. It allows students to step outside the walls of the standard curriculum and apply their inquiry skills in a self-driven service action project. Aligning with the College’s core value of service, the project also provides opportunities for our boys to work in groups, develop collaboration and communication skills, all while learning something about themselves.
Our Year 8 boys did a marvellous job presenting their projects, certainly showcasing boarders in action connecting with and serving their school and home communities. They presented confidently and with good humour. The Year 6 and 7s were great helpers ensuring parents and guests found classrooms for presentations and they championed for their Year 8 boarding brothers in the audience.

COVID vaccinations
Thank you to all the parents who have already organised or taken their son’s for their Covid 19 vaccine, it is greatly appreciated.
WA Health have now advised that we can secure a group booking for any boarders age 12 and over to receive their Covid vaccines at the Showgrounds Community Vaccination Clinic.
There will be other members of the public also attending at the same time as the boarders, however the school group will be managed as a separate cohort by a designated group of Community Vaccination Clinic staff along with a staff member from the boarding house.
It is a Government requirement that all students under the age of 18 years receiving the vaccine will need to have a signed consent form by their parents and or legal guardian with them on the day.
The parent and / or legal guardian must:
Register their child as a dependant in the parents account in VaccinateWA (see attached sheet for helpful information on how to register your dependant).
Complete the Covid -19 vaccination form from HealthyWA. The form must be completed and signed. ( see attached consent form below).
Helpful information on the Covid 19 vaccine can be found on :
https://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/Coronavirus/COVID19-vaccine/FAQs
Please can the attached forms be completed and returned to me in person at the Health Centre or via email to fiona.richmond@scotch.wa.edu.au as soon as possible .
We hope this will help all of our boarding parents to get their son’s vaccinated and strongly encourage and recommend vaccination as a way to keep not only our boarding school safe but also the wider community.
Please feel free to contact the Health Centre on 93836818 if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Vaccination.
