Week 8, Summer Term 2021
Dear Boarding Families
I trust you are all looking forward to the end of term holidays and having the boys back for a couple of weeks. From my perspective, we are heading up for a family camping trip to Exmouth and I can’t wait! It has been another busy term at Scotch and I hope that all families get time to wind down, reflect and reset.
Next week we have our boarding parent sundowner on Wednesday 31st March in the Dining Hall. We have invited all senior boarding staff as well as House Heads, Heads of School and the Headmaster. This will be a great opportunity for parents to meet key staff and, importantly, a chance to socialise with each other. I encourage all parents to come along, please purchase tickets at Boarding Parent Sundowner 2021 .
Also, on Wednesday 31st I will be hosting our Boarding Parent Support Group meeting from 2pm-3pm in the Dining Hall annexe. If you would like to be a part of our Boarding Parent Support Group, please get in contact with me Jordan.Owenell@scotch.wa.edu.au and please feel free to come along to that meeting or email me through any agenda items that you would like discussed. We are always looking for parent support and ideas.
Finally, some important information for Year 11 and 12 families regarding the first few weeks of next term. Ms Shirin Reyhani emailed all parents recently regarding the upcoming examination period. The Year 11 and 12 Semester 1 Examination period will begin on Tuesday, 27 April 2021, however, boys will return to boarding on the Monday before – 19th April. Boys will have a week of classes before the examination period starts in week 2. Examination timetables are now available on the Teaching and Learning website:
Semester 1 Examination Timetables
There will be no Year 11 or 12 General classes running during the examination period in weeks 2 and 3. Year 11 students with no examinations should contact the Academic and Pathways Advisor, Brad Watson Brad.Watson@scotch.wa.edu.au , to arrange work experience. Work experience may be done in a boarder’s home town if it is arranged correctly and verified by Mr Watson. Attendance for examinations takes priority, but Yr 11 General students may want to arrange work experience during the holidays or the first few weeks of term if there are no examination clashes.
However, I wanted to emphasise the importance of all Year 12 students returning to school in time to start classes in Week 1 next term. All Year 12s should be returning on 19th April. Week 1 is the last opportunity for them to meet with their teachers before the examination period. Year 12s who study General courses will sit Externally Set Tasks (EST) during the examination period in Weeks 2 and 3 which are compulsory. They need to be here in Week 1 to have time to prepare for these ESTs as well as any ATAR or IB examinations with their teachers.
It is important to note that the Boarding Houses will be open and staffed during the day whilst the boys are on their examinations during week 2 and 3 so they can study at their ‘home’ in boarding. Please keep boarding staff up to date with any holiday, study and work experience arrangements for senior boys in the first few weeks of next term.
I hope that all families enjoy their final weeks of term and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday and Thursday of next week!
Kind regards
Jordan

Boarding Parent Support Group Meeting – Wednesday 31st March at 2:00pm
Jordan will be holding a meeting of Parents and Guardians that would like to support Scotch College with Boarding events and regional tours. The meeting will be held in the Dining Hall Annexe at 2pm on Wednesday 31st March.
Please RSVP to Boarding.Admin@scotch.wa.edu.au if you would like to attend.
Bibbulmun Track – Yr 9
The Year 9’s have been out on the Track from Harris Dam to Balingup with Mr Mellor. Looks like they enjoyed themselves.
Yr 9 Stirling Clan – Breakfast
What a wonderful way to start a glorious day. Stirling Clan Yr 9’s were treated to breakfast at C Blue in Cottesloe. I’m sure Mr Hales and Ms Ball enjoyed a pleasant start to the day also.
BBQ and Footy – is there anything better?
With the rowing dinner tonight we had a BBQ for dinner. Chris Stretch did an excellent job overseeing the BBQ and was well supported by the Year 12s who did the cooking.
At the same time Carlton was playing Richmond in the opening game of the AFL season. A makeshift grandstand was erected in the upstairs prep room and the game was shown on the big screen. The game was close and was well supported so we allowed the boys to watch it until the end. As a consequence we started prep 7 minutes late but I thought it was a good community building moment. Richard Hales, Head of Senior School Residence – Stirling Clan
Year 10 Stirling Clan – Breakfast
Another perfect start to the day in Paradise, or at C Blu, which seems to be Mr Hales preferred breakfast cafe! I’m going to volunteer with Stirling Clan…
MADALAH Camp
Boys at Madala Camp at Point Walter. Very lucky to meet with AFL legend Sid Jackson.
SCOTCH ON THE ROAD – Manjimup and Frankland River
Jordan and Sam Scott spent a couple of days in Manjimup and Frankland River catching up with Scotch Community members. It was lovely to see OSC, Parents of OSC, new parents and current parents. In Manjimup, the function was held at Tall Timbers, which is a fabulous venue and a special treat at Digby Smith’s parents winery – Frankland Estate. Thank you Hunter Smith and Kate McCormack for being amazing hosts.
Free Flu Vaccinations
As the Flu season is approaching, the College is offering free flu vaccinations to all boarders. We strongly advise that all students take up this offer to help protect the boarding community.
Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the Flu.
Dr Grant from GP’s on Bayview will be in the Health Centre on Wednesday April 28th between 7 am and 9 am to administer the vaccine to the boys.
Below is the 2021 FluVaccine Consent Form that must be completed and returned to the Health Centre by Monday April 19th.
Please take the time to read the consent form as it contains the necessary information regarding the vaccine.
Please return all completed forms to the Health Centre or via email to fiona.richmond@scotch.wa.edu.au
