Week 6, Summer Term 2021
Dear Boarding families
I have been thinking all morning that I really would have loved for as many of you as possible to have been at Senior School assembly this morning. It started out as a regular Friday morning at Scotch with the pipes and drums leading our House marching in the Senior School and stirring our school into life but after that, sitting in the audience and listening to the boys was quite remarkable. Firstly, we are treated to two amazing musical pieces by the joint PLC and Scotch Symphony Orchestra. We were addressed by one of our Vice Captains of School, Simon Arnott (a former boarder) about how the boys have raised over $26 000 for leukemia research as part of the Greatest Shave initiative. We celebrated Scotch’s incredible night at the PSA Swimming Carnival, placing second, the highest achievement for as long as anyone around here can remember – but the stories weren’t so much about the records broken and the performances, but more so about the team atmosphere and the support and spirit that the boys showed. We were then addressed by our Captain of Boarding, Brenton Macauley, who spoke really well about some of the great things that are happening in boarding at the moment. And finally we were addressed again by our two Vice Captains of School in a speech encouraging boys to take the opportunities in front of them at Scotch and working together and showing persistence to achieve your goals. It is very hard to put down on paper just how special the whole assembly was, but it certainly made me very proud to be associated with Scotch. And this was just a regular Friday at the College. I sincerely encourage any parents who are able to make it down for a Friday marching and assembly to do so because they are very special. If I can get the footage, I will try and send it around.
The last few weeks have been special in boarding. A couple of noteworthy events have been the celebration of our Festival of Lanterns, which is part of the Chinese New Year Festival. The staff and students were treated to a wonderful dinner and a speech by Michael Gao who spoke of the importance of the day. The boys really enjoyed it. It was a great opportunity to pay tribute to the courage our Chinese students have displayed over the past year, as many of them have been away from family and unable to return home. A special thank you to Jing Wei and Jessica, two of our Chinese student Guardians who came down with friends and led a tutorial for our catering and some of our staff leaders on how to make dumplings. They made over 300 dumplings for the boys that afternoon and it was a wonderful event. We hope to have more events like that throughout the year.
Finally a quick message of good luck to our Year 8s and Year 9s who will soon be going out on the Bib Track. A week on the bibby is a great experience. It is never easy, but it is always rewarding and I’m sure the boys and staff will get a lot out of it. I know I say this all the time but I can’t emphasise enough just how important the Bib Track is to the identity of Scotch Boarding. Whilst I am discussing camps, the Year 7s are currently going through their week of school camp – and I wish them all well – the boys I have spoken to have had a great time. The Year 9s also reported having a wonderful time at Rottnest last week which is always a highlight of the calendar.
I wish all families a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing you on the 31st March for our annual Boarding Parent Sundowner!
