Week 8, Winter Term 2019
Wednesday was the official last day of classes for our Year 12’s. Although there is still a fair way to go for these boys in regard to exams, it was a milestone for them. As a group they have been outstanding and lead the community extremely well. Many of them will still be with us for at least the next couple of months, so they are not lost to us just yet. To those boys who are finishing up now, we wish them all the very best and look forward to seeing them at the Boarders’ Farewell Dinner, March Out and Valedictory Dinner. To the rest, we say study well and make the most of the week’s ahead.
2020 Student Leaders
Throughout the term the Year 11’s have been vying for leadership positions in both the Day School and Residential Community. Without stealing too much of Matt Bradley’s thunder I am pleased to announce the Year 11 Residential boys were able to secure a number of positions across the school. Out of the cohort of 35 boys we have had 8 boys fill leadership positions and – as we should be – we are very proud of them all.
The positions that our Residential boys occupy next year are:
Residential Community
Captain of Residential Life: Patrick Eastough
Vice-Captain of Residential Life (Operations): Tom Graham
Vice-Captain of Residential Life (Service): Zedd Garbellini
Brisbane House
Captain of Brisbane House: Angus Johnston
Ross House
Captain of Ross House: Toby Humphris
Anderson House
Vice Captain of Anderson (Operations): Flynn Le Cornu
Keys House
Keys House Student Council: James Rex
Shearer House
Shearer House Student Council: Arad Rad
What is truly exciting about these appointments is that because this is only the second year that the Boarding boys have been dispersed across the Houses there are a couple of firsts. Toby Humphris becomes the first ever boarder to become the Captain of Ross House and Angus Johnston repeats the feat at Brisbane House, though slightly different because Brisbane was originally a Boarding House.
Congratulations to all and we look forward to watching them grow in their roles over the next twelve months.
PSA Athletics Carnival
Last Friday was another successful PSA Athletics carnival for Scotch as we took the title once again. From memory this makes it at least four wins from the past five carnivals which is an extraordinary accomplishment. From a Boarding perspective we send a special shout out to Reuben Westerman (Year 11) who not only won the High Jump for his age group, but also broke the record at he same time. Considering he has been recovering from a severe knee injury this is an unbelievable result. Well done Reuben!!
Congratulations to all athletes, staff and supporters on what was another great day and we must not forget the Year 12’s who were present to lead the cheering. It was noticeable on a number of occasions how our runners lifted in the final 100m when they heard the Scotch boys cheering them on!!
Year 7/8 and 9 House Pack Up
Over these holidays the Year 7/8 and 9 Houses are being rented out so we need the boys to completely pack up their rooms and store their gear. It would certainly assist us if you could take any excess clothes home, particularly the heavy winter gear, as we expect that the weather will a bit warmer when the boys return. The House Mother’s have already been warning the boys of what is happening and if you could please reinforce the message it would be greatly appreciated.
Travel Arrangements
Thanks to all for completing your travel arrangements for this term though we still have a few outstanding. We say goodbye to the Year 10’s today and wish them a happy holiday and look forward to farewelling the other boys over the next few days.
A reminder to all that the boys are due to return to the Boarding Houses on Tuesday 15 October ready for school to begin on Wednesday. Spring Term also sees a return to summer uniform (with the tie still to be worn as an exception) so please ensure that your son is prepared for this change.
Year 8 Community Projects
After many long months of planning and hard work the Year 8 Community Projects were presented to parents, students and staff. The evening involved each group talking through their project to a large group of people highlighting what their project was and the process involved in planning, designing and of course, their end result. The presentations were of a very high standard and all boys should be commended and congratulated for the hard work that was put into their projects. All presentations were recorded and will be available for viewing through the College network in the near future.
Middle School Highland Games
Next Friday is one of the highlights for the Middle School year with the running of the Highland Games. The Highland Games used to be a fixture on the Scotch College calendar, but after a number of years in the wilderness, made a triumphant return to the Middle School last year. It was a terrific day and one well worth coming down and supporting, just in time to take yours son’s home for the holiday.
This has nothing to do with Scotch!!
Even though the below has nothing to do with Scotch we just thought for those who used to travel down and watch the football or other events at Subiaco Oval, the pictures below of the almost demolished stands, might be of interest. Amazing how a place of so many years and significant moments in our history can be transformed so quickly. The site is now the location for the new Bob Hawke State School and Subiaco precinct.
Holiday Travel Arrangements – Term 4!
All arrangements should now be entered into REACH for this Term’s holidays, and your attention should be (that is, if your son flies home) on the end of the year. With school having different finishing days for each Year Group it is important that you know what date your son is finishing so that you book the appropriate train or plane.
The Middle School like to have all Year 8 boys here for the Middle School Speech Night because predominantly the night is designed to say farewell to the Year 8’s. We will be keeping the Boarding House open on this night for those Year 8 boys who need to stay on and will organize transport to the airport or train station the following day. If you need any help with understanding when your son is due to leave then please feel free to contact Michelle or Jan.
The same could also be said for any Year 9 to 12 boys who might receive an award at Speech night on the last day of the year. We will keep the Boarding Houses open that extra night and provide transport on the following day so the boys can attend if they wish.
Year 11 and 12 Exam Timetables
Please find below the link to the Year 11 and 12 Exam Timetables for Semester Two. The timetables can be downloaded from this site and any changes that are made within the next few weeks will be updated automatically.

2019 Academic Check Up – 19 October 2019
The Academic Check Up programme is available to regional students in Year 2 and above. The programme offers boys the opportunity to be assessed annually on their progress in reading, writing and numeracy and provides support with recommended reading lists, websites and software. There is no charge for this programme and is open to all boys, regardless of whether or not they are registered with Scotch College.
The Academic Check Up programme gives regional families an insight as to how their son is performing in relation to the boys at Scotch College, their areas of strength and their areas for development.
If you know of any families who may be interested in this programme then please ask them to contact Di Moran in Admissions.
Wishing you all a great weekend!!
