Week 6, Winter Term 2019
A big apology to all our Father’s, whom we forgot to wish a Happy Father’s Day to last week. We hope you had a great day and were well looked after by your kids, or at least got a phone call!!
The last week of school is coming up for our Year 11 students, as they prepare for their exams and work experience. The Year 12’s have a week and half to go while the Year 10’s have a couple more, and then head off for their expeditions or early holidays. The Year 7 to 9 boys still have 3 weeks to endure, but we know they are more than capable of toughing it out!
Scott has been busy posting a few blogs about what has been happening in the Middle School Residence. My favourite is ‘keepin it reel’, and these can be viewed HERE!
Congratulations to the Eagles last night on a great win, we are looking forward to seeing how far they can go!!
Holiday Travel Arrangements – Term 4!
All arrangements should now be entered into REACH for this Term’s holidays, and your attention should be (that is, if your son flies home) on the end of the year. With school having different finishing days for each Year Group it is important that you know what date your son is finishing so that you book the appropriate train or plane.
The Middle School like to have all Year 8 boys here for the Middle School Speech Night because predominantly the night is designed to say farewell to the Year 8’s. We will be keeping the Boarding House open on this night for those Year 8 boys who need to stay on and will organize transport to the airport or train station the following day. If you need any help with understanding when your son is due to leave then please feel free to contact Michelle or Jan.
The same could also be said for any Year 9 to 12 boys who might receive an award at Speech night on the last day of the year. We will keep the Boarding Houses open that extra night and provide transport on the following day so the boys can attend if they wish.
PSA Athletics Carnival
Next Friday is the 2019 PSA Athletics carnival and Scotch go in as the defending champions. The coaching staff have been working hard with the boys throughout the past few weeks to quickly get them up to speed, in what is a relatively short Athletics Season. The event is being held at the WA Athletics Stadium (AK Reserve, Stephenson Ave, Floreat WA 6014) and usually begins at 8.30am and should be finished by 3.00pm.
If you have never been to a PSA Athletics event it is really worth getting to because the atmosphere and quality of athletes competing is outstanding!!
Newdegate Field Days
Richard and I had the pleasure of attending the Newdegate Field Day last week and it was terrific again to catch up with families within the region. It was a a very cold couple of days, and I want to thank the canteen team at the Field Day for the awesome Vegetable Soup, it certainly kept us warm!!
Chapman Valley Show
The 70th Annual Chapman Valley Show will be held on Saturday, September 7th. If you are near Geraldton come and see Grant Bennett for a catchup and join in the festivities. It is being held 26km out of Geraldton on the Chapman Valley Road. There is something for everyone and it is a great family day out. Look forward to seeing you there.
Tomorrow Man
The Year 10’s have their final Tomorrow Man session on Tuesday night starting at 6.30pm. The boys have already gained so much from the programme and are looking forward to their final one next week.
Northam Show
The Northam Farmers Show is being held on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th September, with Marcus planning to attend the show on Saturday. This year’s Show theme is ‘Recycle for a Brighter Future’. The Show is being held at the Showgrounds on Peel Terrace with a large number of competitions including: Pavilion, Animal and Equestrian categories. Come on down for a fun day out.
Fire Pits
Over the past few weeks we have purchased fire pits for all three houses as we feel that these are a great way for the boys to get out of the houses and enjoy the beautiful winter evenings we have had recently. Unfortunately, we are discovering that fire pits need wood and that the boys are enjoying their fires so much that we are having to source bags and bags of wood from the local timber yards. Though we don’t mind this, we are hoping that if you have some spare room in your cars, you might be able to throw a bag or two of wood, on your next trip in to help lessen the expense of our fireside chats.
Year 11 and 12 Exam Readiness Program
Last Sunday the School Library was open from 9.30am to 12.30pm for the Year 11 and 12 boarders to begin their study prep for their end of term exams and this will continue for the next few weeks. A number of Year 11’s took advantage of the opportunity while the Year 12’s need a little bit more encouragment. The main focus for these sessions is purely on preparing notes for future study and the revision of old exam papers. Matt Bradley will be supervising these sessions to begin with and will be there to provide the boys with any assistance that they may require.
Our Elevate Education Sessions have expressed how important it is to have time to develop high quality notes and that these should be compiled prior to the examination period commencing.

2019 Academic Check Up
The Academic Check Up programme is available to regional students in Year 2 and above. The programme offers boys the opportunity to be assessed annually on their progress in reading, writing and numeracy and provides support with recommended reading lists, websites and software. There is no charge for this programme and is open to all boys, regardless of whether or not they are registered with Scotch College.
The Academic Check Up programme gives regional families an insight as to how their son is performing in relation to the boys at Scotch College, their areas of strength and their areas for development.
If you know of any families who may be interested in this programme then please ask them to contact Di Moran in Admissions.
Wishing you all a great weekend!!
