MS Residence: National Science Week
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centers. These events attract a wide audience from children to adults and science amateurs to professionals. Over one million people participate in science events across the nation.
Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in.
Science week @ Scotch took place on Monday 12th August concluding Thursday 15th August.
In keeping with the theme of participation Science practicals were scheduled for Monday – Wednesday’s lunch breaks in the Middle School.
Heart and lung dissections, volcanic explosions and water rockets were just a few of the experimental undertakings held over the week.
Given the range of hands-on activities on offer, I was sure that there would be a high number of boys participating from the residential community. I was not left disappointed.
As you could imagine, the Residential boys took control of the dissections and the water rockets with a few asking to run the practicals without teacher assistance the following day!
All had a great week, and it was pleasing to see the boys take opportunities on offer not just in the classroom, yet in their own time at school.
