MS Residence: Bibbulmun Track 2019
The Year 7 boarders took their first steps of an incredible journey in Week 6 this term. The boys start their 1000km track walk with an overnight expedition, walking 11km’s on the first day, finishing with a 10km walk on day 2.
Whilst it is an opportunity to connect with nature the experiential learning The Bibbulmun track provides cannot be measured. Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making are developed each and every time these boys step out onto the track.
These experiences bond boys for life. Long after students leave school, many still recall their Bibbulmun track experience as the most memorable of their time at school. The shared experience builds the community and culture of not only the group but most importantly, allows boys to discover what it takes to develop independence.
It was extremely pleasing to see the boys thanking businesses for their hospitality after using their facilities whilst leaving the premises in a better state where possible than to what it was when they arrived – “leave no trace”.
Whilst the first group were greeted with sunny skies and ordered to put their sunscreen on before each walk, the second group placed their gumboots, rain jackets and snorkel on for both days of walking. Whilst the weather differentiated both walks, the positivity, and inclusivity both groups displayed on their walks as well as the bundle of fun had as personalities flourished made sure each group shared similar experiences.
Whilst the boys will remember their first steps on the Bibbulmun track, the journey commenced the week prior with a gear collection at the outdoor education storeroom, a presentation from our most recent end to ender’s and a 2km walk around lake Claremont fully kitted out with their boots and packs on.
The year 12’s provided tips on how to best pack your bags, the what to and what not to take and shared some of their knowledge on preferable walking and break times.
It was great to see the Year 7’s and Year 12’s finish the afternoon with a BBQ and games night together. Please make sure you visit Vidigami to view more photos and videos of the walk.
