Code ORANGE – Evacuation
On activation of the fire alarm or being directed to evacuate
Teachers should:
- Instruct students to ‘buddy up’ with another student or occupant in order to facilitate accountability for all occupants.
- Evacuate students via the nearest, safe exit ensuring lifts are not used. Close doors as you evacuate but do not lock them.
- NOTE: Teachers should be aware of and prepared to direct students to alternative egress routes should primary paths become unsafe.
- Ensure Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) are activated for occupants and visitors with disabilities and that these persons are assisted from the building or are in a refuge accompanied by another person.
- Lead students to the assembly area in a calm and orderly
Students and other occupants should:
- ‘Buddy up’ with another student or occupant in order to be able to account for one another.
- Follow the instructions of a Teacher or Warden.
- Leave via the nearest safe exit – do not use lifts.
- Proceed directly to the Assembly Area.
- Remain at the Assembly Area until cleared to re-enter the site by the Chief Warden.
- If you notice anyone who was present prior to the evacuation is now missing, report this to a Teacher or Warden.
Post-evacuation
Teachers should:
- At the Assembly Area, congregate students together in class groups.
- Ask students if they know of anyone who was present prior to the evacuation and is now missing.
- Report to the Warden at the Assembly Area regarding:
- Persons unaccounted for
- Persons refusing to leave and their location
- The location of occupants and visitors with disabilities
- Any areas unable to be searched
- The condition of the area
Ensure occupants and visitors do not re-enter the site until allowed by the Chief Warden.
