Code RED – Fire
On discovery of a fire
The primary duty of occupants is, to the best of their ability, and with the safety of themselves and others of paramount concern, to remove people from immediate danger.
On discovery of a fire:
- Remove people from immediate danger.
- Raise the alarm.
- Communicate to other staff in the near vicinity the existence of a fire – shout “Fire Fire Fire”.
- Contact the Chief Warden by dialling ext 800 or 9383 6800 (Main Reception) and advise of the location and nature of the emergency.
- Main Reception will contact the Chief Warden (or Deputy Chief Warden).
- Contact the Emergency Services by dialling 000.
- Close (but do not lock) doors to create compartmentalisation, slow the progress of the fire and contain smoke.
- Commence evacuation of the building, directing occupants to Evacuate via the nearest safe exit to the Assembly Area.
- Ensure occupants / visitors with disabilities are assisted from the building or are located to a safe refuge with confident person.
- The location of occupants / visitors with disabilities should be reported to the Chief Warden.
