Year 10 Language & Culture; with Spanish Beginners
For language study in Year 10, we have an alternative pathway to Language Acquisition called Language & Culture.
Students choosing this pathway alternate 1 semester of Spanish Beginners – (see below) with 1 semester of Language & Culture.
The Language & Culture courses are based around the College focus of teaching skills through the Approaches to Learning. With these ATLs as our driver, it has been possible to step away from the linguistic rigors of vocabulary and grammar towards a cultural approach in both French and Indonesian. These students will move through two Culture modules; with input on ‘Teaching Through Creativity’ from Paul Collard, an external advisor to the College. The new Culture courses are demanding but engaging. The language itself will no longer be the focus, but the academic demands for one production piece and one written essay will continue in every module and will inform the course score and overall grade in this course.
The Spanish Beginner’s course has arisen from student demand and all students in the Culture streams will take it for one Semester. This does not affect the Year 11 subject selection. (There is also a stream of Acquisition students that will do Semester 1 French or Indonesian and Semester 2 Spanish Beginners.)
The year looks like this:
One Semester of French Units on: Cinema / Gastronomy
or
One Semester of Indonesian Units on: Festivals / Propaganda & Sport
PLUS
One Semester of Spanish Beginners on rotation, beginning October or April
Note: Students who choose the Language & Culture pathway will not be able to take Senior French or Indonesian courses in Year 11. Spanish Year 11 studies will be open to them however.
