STEM
The STEM elective is based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – in an integrated, inquiry-based approach.
Students will be led by a team of specialist teachers, with a focus on real-world problem-solving with support from both university and industry partners. Students will develop their creative and critical thinking skills through the application of computer-modelling, 3D printing, laser cutting, coding and electronics. They will develop both technical and non-technical skills with the aim to become self-directed learners. There is a strong emphasis on working safely in the workshop setting. Upon completion, students will be exposed to a wide range of exciting STEM career opportunities.
The STEM course helps prepare boys for a number of WACE and DP selections in Years 11 and 12 in the areas of Science, Mathematics, and Design & Technology.
Students will create solutions to problems by:
- Investigating and defining
- Designing
- Producing and implementing
- Evaluating
- Collaborating and managing
The following non-technical Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills will be explicitly taught through the course:
- Research: Information Literacy – IB.ATL.RES.1.05 Collect and analyse data to identify solutions and make informed decisions.
- Social: Collaboration Skills – IB.ATL.SOC.1.04 Delegate and share responsibility for decision-making.
- Thinking: Critical Thinking – IB.ATL.THI.1.16 Identify obstacles and challenges.
- Self Management: Organisation Skills – IB.ATL.MAN.1.06 Bring necessary equipment and supplies to class.
