Language Acquisition Indonesian
The Year 8 Indonesian programme is based around Phase 2 learners. On occasion, beginners are taught as Phase 1 within a more experienced class and encouraged to catch up within the existing topics. Class streaming from the Year 7 results enables extension for the faster or more experienced learners, even within Phase 2.
In Summer Term, students learn about tourism and travelling in Indonesia in the unit Liburan ke Bali (Holiday to Bali). They will learn to convey information about Indonesia and the language structure involved in communicating about travelling. In Autumn Term, prepositions of place are featured in the unit Transportasi (Transportation). Students learn to describe objects in relation to others, and use this language in talking about getting around. The language of asking for and giving directions, and expressing opinion about their favourite type of transport in Indonesia, will be explored. In Winter Term, students engage in further exploration on all kinds of play and playing in the unit Olahraga dan Pertandingan Asia Tenggara (Sport and the South East Asian Game). The language of playing and hobbies is explored through asking questions and explaining what kinds of sports young people like. Students will also explore the various SEA Games sports, the competing countries and get to know how to describe famous sportspeople using adjectives of physical appearances. In Spring Term, students learn about various types of Indonesian traditional dishes and the concept of street food stalls in the unit Di Warung (At the Street Food Stall). Students will also discuss differences in Indonesia and Australia regarding table manners. At the end of this unit, students will be able to order foods and drinks, read menus, talk about favourite foods and about the taste of foods in the Indonesian language.
Students will have to maintain a digital portfolio, which will consist of audio visual recording and writing tasks in the target language.
Assessment and reporting are ongoing throughout the year with the boys being formally assessed in the following criteria twice per year:

Criterion B – Comprehending written and visual text
Criterion C – Communicating orally in response to spoken text
Criterion D – Using language in written form
