New Year 9’s

  • We welcomed our new year 9’s for 2024 at our Boarder’s Assembly on Wednesday 22nd November. The boys then came into our Senior Residence on Sunday 26th November for some fun at the beach with our leaders for 2024, my son Aubrey who is in their year group tagged along. This was followed up with a sleepover in the Senior Boarding House. Monday 27th November saw these boys head to Senior School Orientation Day. Our new boys include three younger siblings of current Year 10-12 boys, the new boys are for 2024 are: Ben Carrington (Broome), Kade Gangell (Kulin), Milo Hewson (Broomehill) Van Jasper (Kulin), Archie Macnamara (Williams) younger brother of Oli (yr 12), Lennox Mongoo (Carnarvon) younger brother of Keion (yr 12), Riley Raffan (Badgingarra), Oliver Risinger (Dongara) younger brother of Xavier (yr 11), Harrison Smith (Cunderdin), Ethan Sullivan (Paraburdoo) and two new boys Rishi Munro from Bali, and Zac West, cousin of Toby Jones (yr 12) from Esperance.

New Year 10’s

  • Boys from both clans headed along to the “Try-a-Trade” Career Taster excursion at South Metro TAFE. From the smiles on faces, and the reviews these boys loved the day!

  • Congratulations to Tom Falconer-Radford who continually received Theresa’s 5-Star Award for the tidiest room in the Year 10 wing throughout the last few weeks of term!

New Year 11’s

  • John & Oscar of the boys (along with seven boys from Stirling Clan) made the commitment to keep walking the Bib Track. They walked 126.2km over 6 days, from Palings Rd (North of Beedelup) to Northcliffe, under the guidance of Mr. Scott Galipo (House Head of Shearer) and Mr. Callum Rigby (Outdoor Education Assistant). Boys enjoyed and welcomed the significant number of swimming spots, as well as the Pemberton Caravan Park. Well done John & Oscar on your choice to continue this significant Rite of Passage.
  • Congratulations to Dallmyn Kelly, who has been elected Madalah Head Boy for 2024. Dallmyn attended a lunch at Parliament House on Wednesday 29th November. Ben Stack also received a Madalah Student Council for 2024, Congratulations Dallmyn & Ben, good luck with your roles for 2024!

  • Congratulations to John McGinniss, who received Kerry Wilhelm (Stirling House Mum) award for Best room in the Year 11 Wing.

New Year 12’s

  • We said goodbye to School Captain David Walton, although we (Boarding & Blair Clan will claim him for the rest of the year).
  • I finally managed to get these boys over to my house for a BBQ. After trying a Monday, where it looked like only 3 of them would make it, a late switch to Tuesday worked well as it meant both Alex Wood (my Assistant Head of Residence) & Theresa Moss (House Mum) were able to join us, although we were missing Noah McCreery (who was unwell at home) and my wife who was at the MLC Boarding Christmas dinner! There was an attempt at a version of handball which Fergus was keen on playing with the big boys.

  • 5 boys (along with 5 Stirling boys and 2 ex-boarders) completed the 115.6km leg from Inlet Rd (near Broke Inlet) to Peaceful Bay under the guidance of Mrs. Rochelle Gaudieri (Middle School Teacher) and Miss Katie Guy (Outdoor Education). From the photos and videos I have seen, the boys had a fantastic time, caught fish, built a river wave and generally enjoyed being with each other on our beautiful southern coast! Well done Hudson, Toby, Oli Mac, Noah, & Oli Wandel, it seems like only yesterday I walked into Balingup with you all, and you weren’t even half way! One more walk (148.1.km) boys!

  • On Thursday 23rd November, we had our Year 12 Boys “Bring a Mate to Dinner”. 44 hungry, hot Year 12 boys descended on Keys House, a great opportunity for the day boys to see how our boarders live!

Year 13 (Leavers 2022)

  • Valedictory on Saturday 25th November and then the Awards Assembly on Friday 1st December.

Christmas & Secret Santa

On Thursday November 30th, we had Christmas Dinner in the Dining Hall, this was followed with a Secret Santa’s for the three year groups. Many thanks to our 2024 leader, Oli Wandel for organising. A great initiative that allowed boys to show their “family away from home” that they care!

Final Week Beach Fish & Chips

On Monday 4th December Steven Montgomery & I took the entire Senior Boarding House for Fish & Chips at Cottesloe Beach.

We departed the house at 5pm and returned to Keys House at 7.30pm for Prep. Boys were well fed, played Spikeball on the beach and had a nice refreshing swim with the odd wave!

The prize is achieved by nominations from at least six teachers in Years 9 and 10 and at least five teachers in Year 11. An Endeavour Prize is superseded by a Subject Prize or a Proficiency Prize.”

“A Subject Prize is awarded in each subject that runs for the whole year. A student who attends a cross campus class, is in a class with a small cohort or who studies a Diploma course through Pamajo can still win a Subject Prize if their results are of a prize winning standard (at least an A in WACE or a high Grade 6 or 7 in Diploma). In the Diploma program, Subject Prizes are available for Standard Level and Higher Level.”

Academic Assistance

A reminder, if you identify or believe your son may need specific academic assistance, please speak directly with Mr. Alex Wood (Assistant Head of Residence – Blair Clan) and CC me in. Alex oversees our academic tutors. While we do our best to monitor their academic achievements, sometimes boys will divulge information to you their parents, and as much as I preach strength in adversity, asking for help is a sign of strength, we know men in particular like to think they can solve their own problems themselves.

We have available Monday to Thursday up to four academic tutors as well as three boarding mentors to assist during Prep time.

Alex’s email is alex.wood@scotch.wa.edu.au

I hope you are able to spend some quality time with your sons this holiday period.

Thanks

Andy

On Saturday 5th August, the Crown Ballroom played host to the Madalah 2023 Ball. Madalah is a scholarship provider that Scotch College partners with to provide opportunities for young Indigenous people to attend school and university.

I was lucky enough to attend, where Scotch College OSC (2015) and Young Australian of the Year (2020) Yarlalu Thomas was a special guest. But the highlight of the night for me was the performance of our own Ben Stack on guitar, with fellow Scotch students Dallmyn Kelly and Nick Chi. These proud young Indigenous men showed poise, composure and performed to a standing ovation. Well done gents!

The Arts

Drama

Congratulations to Clement Hardie (Year 11) for his involvement as part of the backstage crew in the “Treasure Island” drama production. An amazing production which involved students from Years 9 through to Year 12. Involvement in a drama production requires a commitment of a huge amount of time to the production, a lot of Sunday and evening rehearsals. Congratulations on your involvement in bringing such a story to life on the stage, combining music, singing and acting.

Sport

State Representatives

We would like to congratulate:

Claremont Football Club

Congratulations to Jaezari Wynne who made his Claremont Colts debut on Saturday 10th June against Peel Thunder.

Clash of the Clans

We have much work to do after our recent losses in Table Tennis and Volleyball. A great turn out at Boarders Got Talent on Wednesday 28rth June, saw us clinch a good win. Ben Stack & Solomon Short played Wagon Wheel on their guitars, Jasper Good & Oli Macnamara set about trying to throw marshmallows into each other’s mouths, succeeded once and then showed how many they could fit, while Jensen Westerman gave us 4 backflips.

Clash of the Clans

The clan games are important for creating identity within our boarding community, as well as an extension of the Scotch values of Integrity, Service and Stewardship. The Table Tennis tournament organised by Jensen & Jett has been a huge success. Unfortunately our own Mike Liu went down in the final, which sees Stirling take the win.

Wednesday 31st May, the night before the long weekend saw Blair take on Stirling in Volleyball. Stirling proved too strong, winning the Year 9, Year 10 and Year 12 games, while we won convingly in the Year 11 game.

Many thanks to Jensen for his organisation.

Any students with Exams must attend these at school. AAP students will have a work placement commitment to fulfil (please see email from Ms. Meg Baker).

Blair Clan Teams Meeting

I hosted two parent meetings, one for parents of year 9 boys and one for parents of all boys in the clan. Both were well attended. It’s great to see faces, touch bases, but I think also good for parents to see each other and match boys with their parents!

  • Year 12 Parents – Wednesday 24th May

I’d like to wish you all a happy and safe easter and an enjoyable April Holidays! Cherish the time spent with family and loved ones!

Prize Winners

Congratulations to the following students who were presented with their prizes at the Senior School Presentation Ceremony on Friday 3rd December.

SS Presentation Ceremony Prize winners

“An Endeavour Prize is awarded to a student in Year 9, 10 or 11 who is industrious and who consistently demonstrates that they are striving to work to their full potential.

“A Proficiency Prize is awarded for a high level of performance across all learning areas. In Year 9 and 10 this is determined by summing the course results achieved by each student and the top 5% receive a Proficiency Prize. In the Diploma program the grades of each student are summed and the students ranked. In the WACE program the school scores for each student’s best five subjects are summed and the students ranked. The top 5% receive a Proficiency prize. The top student in WACE, Diploma and VET programs are awarded Dux.”

Paintballing saw Blair with a great win.

The year 10’s fought valiantly but went down to Stirling in the Softball match on Monday 28th November.

Other News

Blair Clan Teams Meeting

Was held on Friday 2nd December, with approximately seven families in attendance. It was great to meet some of the new families joining Senior Boarding for 2023, as well as parents of some of our overseas students.

Programs

“Preparing boys for life”, in looking to provide a structured, supportive and caring educational environment in which boys develop skills and attitudes which prepare them to become contributing and caring adults in modern society. This is done through Wellbeing Programs and Life Skills.

Recreational Skippers Ticket

In late November Mr. Alex Wood, Assistant Head of Residence for Blair Clan oversaw the delivery of the Recreational Skippers Ticket to some of our Year 11 & 12 students. Having an RST means legally the owner is eligible to drive a recreational boat.

Your sons can look forward to these programs in 2023.

Tomorrow Man

The flagship program, “Breaking the Man Code”, question the rules of masculinity creating space for real and honest conversations, is six modules spread over Year 10 and year 11.

Circle Convos

Our year 9 students will undertake Circle Convos with Rev Gary. These are not new to the boys, having done something similar in Middle School Boarding. These conversations create a deep listening experience for our students and provide a forum of acknowledgement as stories are shared by a group of witnesses.

Keys4Life

I will implement the School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) program Keys 4 Life to the Year 10 students. Keys 4 Life is a pre-driver education program that allows students to learn about safe driving and sit their Learner’s Permit Theory Test.

P.A.R.T.Y Program

The Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y) Program is undertaken by our Year 11 students. It is an injury prevention initiative run at Royal Perth Hospital. The program provides useful, relevant information to young people to help them recognise potential injury-causing situations and make informed prevention-oriented choices about activities. It is also designed to help them adopt behaviours and actions that minimise risk.

City After Dark Tour

The City After Dark Tour is undertaken by our Year 12 students.

After dark, the city changes and the safety risks increase. Young people may be vulnerable to crimes such as theft and assault.

City After Dark (CAD) tours are designed for secondary school students, tertiary students and community youth groups.

Led by a WA Police Officer and a Constable Care Foundation assistant, tours highlight how relatively safe areas during the day become riskier when darkness falls.

Workshop Skills

Mr. Brent Van Ingen-Kal (Design & Technology Teacher) will look to provide some hands on skills in and around home maintenance and DIY skills to boys from year 9-12.

Finally, I wish you all a safe break, enjoy time with your sons, have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Andy

]]> Spring Term Mid-Term Update – Spring Term 2022 https://home.scotch.wa.edu.au/scotch-boarding/2022/11/10/spring-term-mid-term-update/ Thu, 10 Nov 2022 03:14:15 +0000 https://home.scotch.wa.edu.au/scotch-boarding/?p=5467 What is often the shortest term, sometimes feel like the longest term with no mid-term break. But we are now more than four weeks in and week one saw our year 13 (year 12 2022) boys celebrate the ending of their official time at Scotch with House and Boarding Dinners, Final Assembly and March Out. We ushered in our “new” Year 10, 11 and 12 students and the responsibilities and privileges that go with those year groups. Our official student leaders (Jensen Westerman and Kaymus Brierly) have stepped into their new roles and we have already had one year group out on Bib Track (I spent 5 days with the Year 10’s earlier this term).

Here’s what your sons have been up to in boarding:

New Year 10

  • We welcomed Jordy Bowden (Kalgoorlie) into Blair Clan. Jordy’s smile can almost be seen from Kalgoorlie.
  • Boys enjoyed Recreation activities:
    • Ice Skating on Friday 14th October
    • Driving Range @ Wembley Golf Course Saturday 15th, 22nd, 29th October & 5th November
    • Cottesloe Beach Run on Sunday 16th, 23rd, 30th October & 6th November
    • BBQ and Games at Senior School on Friday 21st October
    • Black Adam Movie at Event Cinemas Innaloo on Saturday 22nd October
    • Karrinyup Shopping Centre Visit on Sunday 23rd October
    • Fish & Chips with PLC in Fremantle on Friday 28th October
    • Halloween Disco at Aquinas on Friday 4th November
    • Perth 4WD Show on Sunday 6th November
    • WBBL Scorchers v Strikers @ Lilac Hill on Sunday 6th November
  • The year 9 boys continued with their fortnightly activity entitled “Circle Convos”. Run by Reverend Gary van Heerden. We heard from John McGinniss.

  • Boys completed the Swamp Oak to Harris Dam leg (5 days, 98.8km) of the Bibbulmun Track from Sunday 16th to Thursday 20th October. I had the privilege of walking this leg with the boys, as a clan. I was so impressed with the attitude, effort, comradeship of this group of boys! I loved being out there with them, and both myself and Mr. Johan Schroeder had an absolute ball. The boys have only one more compulsory walk before the Bib Track becomes optional. The next leg will see them go past the halfway point from Kalamunda to Albany. More photos are available via vidgami.

New Year 11

  • We welcomed Rylan Firth (Dubai), David Shen (China) and Donnacha Spencer (Hong Kong) into Blair Clan. The three boys have provided much value and involvement into many of the school and boarding activities so far.
  • Boys have begun their final courses of study with a vast array of choice, covering International Baccalaureate, ATAR and the Alternative Academic Pathway (AAP). I am fully supportive of boys choosing courses that are enjoyable and challenging to them, individual choices are important as is each boy achieving at their “own” best.
    • Some have started classes off campus as part of Vocational Education and Training Certificate courses. Needing to organise their time in order to catch public transport to and from their education centres. Further improving their life skills.
  • Boys enjoyed the following Recreation activities:
    • Ice Skating on Friday 14th October
    • Golf @ Cottesloe Golf Course on Saturday 15th, 22nd, 29th October & 5th November
    • Driving Range @ Wembley Golf Course Saturday 15th, 22nd, 29th October & 5th November
    • Cottesloe Beach Run on Sunday 16th, 23rd, 30th October, 6th November
    • BBQ and Games at Senior School on Friday 21st October
    • Black Adam Movie at Event Cinemas Innaloo on Saturday 22nd October
    • Karrinyup Shopping Centre Visit on Sunday 23rd October
    • Fish & Chips with PLC in Fremantle on Friday 28th October
    • Perth 4WD Show on Sunday 6th November
    • WBBL Scorchers v Strikers @ Lilac Hill on Sunday 6th November
  • I spent Friday the 21st of October with Jordan Owenell in Bunbury, and Saturday 22nd at the Brunswick Show for Scotch on the Road. It was great to see the Pipe band performing. Well done Oli Wandel.

  • We celebrated Keion’s Birthday with a special cake and treats courtesy of the Mongoo family. Keion made sure to share these with his friends and the staff on duty!

  • The boys have now completed their “Tomorrow Man” program, completing Module 6 (Write Your Own Code). I encourage you to speak to your son about what they are experiencing within the program. Their maturity in the Tomorrow Man workshops so far has been impressive, and that is why we (Scotch) have been asked to be a part of a one off pilot, where the boys will be involved in one session of the “Tomorrow Woman (Her Code)” with the aim for participants to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges of being a woman in 2023. This is scheduled for late March 2023. The Objectives:
  • Explore the current female stereotype and expectations placed on young women in today’s society.
  • Understand the challenges + impact of these narrow and unrealistic expectations.
  • Build empathy for and understanding of the female experience.
  • Identify actions to support women in their lives and at school + the ways to become a strong ally to women

New Year 12

  • Boys enjoyed Recreation activities:
    • Driving Range @ Wembley Golf Course Saturday 15th, 22nd, 29th October & 5th November
    • Cottesloe Beach Run on Sunday 16th, 23rd, 30th October, 6th November
    • BBQ and Games at Senior School on Friday 21st October
    • Black Adam Movie at Event Cinemas Innaloo on Saturday 22nd October
    • Karrinyup Shopping Centre Visit on Sunday 23rd October
    • Perth 4WD Show on Sunday 6th November
    • WBBL Scorchers v Strikers @ Lilac Hill on Sunday 6th November
  • The boys attended my house for a BBQ dinner on Friday 12th October. The second time these boys have been guests at our place. Some great conversations.

Year 13 (Leavers 2022)

  • I would like to start by thanking all the boys for being so welcoming to me in my new role.
    • Special Thanks to Tyler Messina in his role as Clan Leader (Vice-Captain of Boarding). Not an easy role, but Tyler has made strong contributions to many of the activities within boarding (Assemblies, Clan games, Ag Day etc..)
  • The final Boarding Dinner was a great night, it was nice to see so many family members present, and it was an honour to speak to and about the boys. My final quote, attributed to Patrick Johnson from his chapter (#23) entitled “My Life’s Voyage in the book Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia centred around the quest for Kaartdijin (the Noongar word for knowledge).

“Don’t fear the unknown. We are the creators of our own destiny. We can empower ourselves through education and knowledge to determine our own paths. Choose a life you want for yourself, and lead by example to empower yourself and the next generation.”

  • Well done to the remaining WACE & IB boys who have been going about their business with dedication over the last four weeks. Best wishes for the future!

Academic Achievement

It was very pleasing to sit in assembly in October and hear the names of our boys who are making the most of their academic opportunities. Well done guys!

Co-Curricular Colours & Honours

These students were presented with their awards at Senior School Assembly on Friday 14th October

https://home.scotch.wa.edu.au/senior-school/2022/10/14/co-curricular-colours-honours-14-october-2022/

Congratulations to:

  • Coen Livingstone who was awarded Honours for Football.

Coen Livingstone, Year 12 Alexander House
Coen debuted in the 1st XVIII Football team in 2021. He made a significant contribution towards the College winning the Alcock Shield in both 2021 and 2022, earning Colours each year.

His developed skills and confidence over the past year saw Coen elevated to the State 18 Football team, where he played several games as a younger squad member.

Coen finished 2022 with a rating average of 4.67 out of six, including two best on ground performances. An untimely injury early in the season resulted in Coen missing games for the state side. This impacted upon his count in the Cyril Hoft Medal for which he would otherwise have been a competitive contender.

Coen dominated games in the air against key opposition players. He was the dominant ruckman in the competition and with his agility and competitive nature, at times he followed up his own ruck taps to win clearances. In the forward line, his powerful marking created set shots and he ably brought other forwards into the game.

Coen is a deserving recipient of Honours for achievement in Football.

  • Tyler Messina & Kody Waters who were awarded WR Dickinson Colours for Leadership

PSA Sport

  • Congratulations to:
    • Jayden Clarke who made his 1st V Basketball debut against Guildford in the opening round of the season.
    • Oliver Wandel who made his 1st VIII Tennis debut against CCGS in round 3.
    • Jensen Westerman who has been appointed Vice-Captain of the 1st VI Volleyball team.
    • Jaezari Wynne has also been a member of the 1st V Basketball team.
  • We have had plenty of boys filling the various sports, with many playing in 2nd’s teams for Basketball, Cricket, Tennis and Water Polo as well as many boys training and competing in the Swimming team and Rowing crews.

Community Service

Congratulations to:

  • Rio Bowling who was awarded Colours for Community Service from Winter Term.

Art

Tuesday 6th September saw the annual Senior School Art and Design Exhibition Opening Night, where the Stairwell Gallery is utilised to display the 2022 exhibition, combining both traditional and innovative mediums and technology as it reflects our diverse range of students’ identities.

I particularly enjoyed seeing the excellent work from the Blair Clan boys:

Music

Solomon Short, as part of his Certificate II in Music performed with his band created within his class at “Scotch Rocks” on Thursday 1st September at the Rosemount Hotel. Solomon and his band put on a good show.

Ag Day

What a huge build up, after initially being cancelled. The event ran concurrently with the Interhouse Athletics Carnival, a necessity after inclement weather forced the change of date from June. Thank you so much to all parents who donated time and produce, it just added to a great day. There are plenty of photos available on vidigami here.

Interhouse Sport

The weather held off long enough for the boys to enjoy the athletics carnival on Friday 27th August. Keys house was successful with many of the Blair Clan boys involved across multiple disciplines.

Photos on vidigami are available here.

Clash of the Clans

After entering the final two competitions trailing Stirling Clan 10-12, I am pleased to confirm that wins in Clan Golf, Hudson Hammond, Toby Jones, Oliver Wandel, Tyler Messina & Sam McGinniss, and the Boarding Quiz night, means we are successful in Winning the Clash of Clans for 2022.

Blair Clan Teams Meeting

The 7.45pm Monday 29th August whole clan parent catch up had several parents attend, including Ann Vanasin, mother of Jate, who started in Winter Term in Year 9. It was great to have experienced parents speak with Ann regarding some of her queries. The plan for Spring term will be to try again for the evening timeslot, firstly for our Academic Year 11 parents (2024 Leavers) before the end of week 4 and for a whole clan parent meeting before week 7. Look out for the invites in your email inbox.

As always please feel free to flick myself an email, text, or give me a buzz, if I don’t answer it’s likely I am teaching. I will get back to you when I can.
